How to choose a water pump
- Work out the job first: pressure for taps and sprinklers, transfer for moving water, or drainage for dirty water.
- Check maximum head (lift height plus pipe losses) and flow rate against the distance and height you need to push water.
- Auto pressure controllers switch the pump on when a tap opens; useful for rain tank and garden systems.
- Submersible pumps must match the water: clean water, dirty water with solids, or bore use.
- Fuel transfer needs a pump rated for diesel or fuel; never use a water pump for fuel.

What size pump do I need for a rain tank?
For a few garden taps, a peripheral or small multi-stage pump with an auto controller is usually enough. Check that its flow and head cover the distance and height to your furthest outlet.
What is pump head?
Head is how high the pump can push water, in metres. Allow for vertical lift plus friction losses along long or narrow pipes.
Can I use a water pump for diesel?
No. Only use a pump rated for diesel or fuel transfer, and follow the fuel safety guidance on the product page.
Do I need a plumber to connect a tank pump?
